Midpoint Reflection

  • How has the internship been the same as and/or different than your expectations? This internship has been just how I expected it would be. I thought I would be helping the teacher do what they have to do and that's exactly what I do. I'm always fixing things in the room and if the kids need help with something they raise their hands and I go and help them. I'm the one Who check their homework and put new homework in their folders. Not always but most of the time.
  • What is similar and different about the culture of your internship workplace environment compared to IHSL's school environment?  Provide examples. A similar thing about the cultures of my internship and IHSL is that there are many different languages just like in our school. Kids in this school are little but so smart because some of the kids that I met in this school could speak even three languages.
  • What new skills have you learned that you can apply at other jobs?  For example, have you learned to become a better typist?  If so, how and where could that skill help in the future? I learned a little bit more about being patient with kids and I also learned to understand kids much better. I learned that trying to understand kids can be so complicated but we just have to be patient with them and soon it will be easier to understand them.
  • What other kinds of skills/abilities have you gained so far? Think of the tasks you do and consider the abilities required to do those tasks. I learned that being a teacher is not so easy. It's not just teach and that's it. Being a teacher is so much complicated than that because you have to gain children's respect and make them listen to you. I think that's the hard part of being a teacher because sometime kids don't listen  to you and you get so frustrated.
  • What kinds of communication skills have you gained?  Specifically, how has your English improved since beginning internship?  Well, I thought I knew English but when I went to this school I felt like I was starting again because those kids use higher level words that I don't really understand. Sometime they ask me for spelling and I as a result of all don't always know. The talking and listening I do at Internship, I am less scare of speaking English with  others.
  • What kind of relationship do you have with your mentor and co-workers?My mentor and I are not so close but we talk like normal people do. She says I'm so helpful to her and she says " uh I want to keep you for ever" because I help her a lot.
  • How has the altered schedule affected you?  How have you reorganized your time to make sure you are getting all your classwork done? The altered schedule hasn't affect me at all. I think it is good the way it is. But sometime I do so many things at my internship that when I get home I just fell so sleepy and I just feel like going to bed and I forget to do my homework but I still have time sometime so I try to do homework so I do but sometime I don't.
  • You have SIX WEEKS of internship left. What goals do you hope to accomplish during the remaining weeks? Name at least two goals.
  • My goals are to do well in school ( like do 100% of my homework).
  • Get higher grades in all of my classes especially " English".
  • Get better at understanding kids.
  • What new things have you learned about New York City as a result of being "out and about"? That there are so many opportunities in here and people have to do their best to get what they want because this is a place of opportunities.
