Midpoint Reflection

  • How has the internship been the same as and/or different than your expectations? This internship has been just how I expected it would be. I thought I would be helping the teacher do what they have to do and that's exactly what I do. I'm always fixing things in the room and if the kids need help with something they raise their hands and I go and help them. I'm the one Who check their homework and put new homework in their folders. Not always but most of the time.
  • What is similar and different about the culture of your internship workplace environment compared to IHSL's school environment?  Provide examples. A similar thing about the cultures of my internship and IHSL is that there are many different languages just like in our school. Kids in this school are little but so smart because some of the kids that I met in this school could speak even three languages.
  • What new skills have you learned that you can apply at other jobs?  For example, have you learned to become a better typist?  If so, how and where could that skill help in the future? I learned a little bit more about being patient with kids and I also learned to understand kids much better. I learned that trying to understand kids can be so complicated but we just have to be patient with them and soon it will be easier to understand them.
  • What other kinds of skills/abilities have you gained so far? Think of the tasks you do and consider the abilities required to do those tasks. I learned that being a teacher is not so easy. It's not just teach and that's it. Being a teacher is so much complicated than that because you have to gain children's respect and make them listen to you. I think that's the hard part of being a teacher because sometime kids don't listen  to you and you get so frustrated.
  • What kinds of communication skills have you gained?  Specifically, how has your English improved since beginning internship?  Well, I thought I knew English but when I went to this school I felt like I was starting again because those kids use higher level words that I don't really understand. Sometime they ask me for spelling and I as a result of all don't always know. The talking and listening I do at Internship, I am less scare of speaking English with  others.
  • What kind of relationship do you have with your mentor and co-workers?My mentor and I are not so close but we talk like normal people do. She says I'm so helpful to her and she says " uh I want to keep you for ever" because I help her a lot.
  • How has the altered schedule affected you?  How have you reorganized your time to make sure you are getting all your classwork done? The altered schedule hasn't affect me at all. I think it is good the way it is. But sometime I do so many things at my internship that when I get home I just fell so sleepy and I just feel like going to bed and I forget to do my homework but I still have time sometime so I try to do homework so I do but sometime I don't.
  • You have SIX WEEKS of internship left. What goals do you hope to accomplish during the remaining weeks? Name at least two goals.
  • My goals are to do well in school ( like do 100% of my homework).
  • Get higher grades in all of my classes especially " English".
  • Get better at understanding kids.
  • What new things have you learned about New York City as a result of being "out and about"? That there are so many opportunities in here and people have to do their best to get what they want because this is a place of opportunities.

Final Reflection

Look back to your earliest posts. What were your goals? Did you achieve these goals? If so, what did you have to do consistently to achieve the goals?
I looked back to my goals and I saw that yes I did achieve my goals. To achieve my goals I haded to be so patient and so careful It wasn't an easy job. Some people are peace off with kids they think that kids are the worst thing ever but I realize it is not like that kids can be better that that.

What are the most important ideas or skills you’ve learned in the last 12 weeks?
On these last past weeks I think that the most important thing I learn how to be patient with kids. It is so important to be patient so you don't get peace off.

In what ways have your grown as a student and young adult?
In this internship I had grown as a responsible student, I know I can be more responsible then I thought and thats important for me because when I get a real job I know I have to be responsible and always do a great job.

What were the highlights (memorable moments) of your internship experience?
For me the most memorable moments were those when I share conversations with the kids. I get to heard some story about some of them how they live and how they are treat at home. They were conforteble talking to me there were some kids with some sad story.

If you were to start internship next week, what is at least one thing you would do differently?
I would try to do a better job by not being shy when the teacher talk to me.

Think of two to three pieces of advice you could offer a new intern at your site.
I for a new intern I will love to tell them to always do the best they can on their internship because they never know when they going to do something like that on real life not only as an intern. And always remember to be on time and act serious in their job because that can help them in their future.

What will you miss about your internship?
I will miss the kids, the job that I use to do and just being at the internship.

Thank You Letter

Dears Carolina Perry
I'm writing you this letter to thanks you for the opportunity that you gave me to be at this school working as an intern. It had being a nice experience to be with all the kids of this school. During the time I was at that school, I had a wonderful time helping the teacher and being with the kids helping them with all they need. This had being the best experience ever, it teaches me how to become prepare for a job. I learn how difficult it is to be a teacher. It was hard to get kids attention and to make them listen. When the teacher was absent the kids didn't listen to anyone I thing that the substitute had a hard time with them. But the good thing is that is not all of them who did not listen; it was just half of the class. You can really make a difference in the field of education for teachers, students and interns like me. I really admire the way you handle your responsibilities because you are really organized. Elementary school is a really nice place to work. It has a really nice environment and various cluster programs that allow kids to engage in meaningful school activities. These programs help me learn so many new things. I will miss you and my new friends a lot. If you want to say hi to me, you can send  hi for me an email at  pteran@inths.org. I would love to hear form you.

Thank you so much!
Sincerely,

Pedro Teran

Starting off Strong - Making your own lyrics

If what I am is what's in me
Then I'll stay strong - that's who I'll be
and I will always be the best
"me" that I can be.

There's only one me, I am it
have a dream I'll follow it
It's up to me to try.
Chorus 1
Oh! I'm a keep my head up high
Keep on reaching high
Never gonna quit
I'll be getting stronger.

And nothing's gonna bring me down (no!)
Never gonna stop, gotta go.
Because I know
I'll keep getting stronger.
 Bridge 1
And what I am is smart
what I am is Happy
what I am is Hispanic
and what I am is Loved
what I am is Helpful
what I am is special
There's nothing I can't achieve.
Because in myself I believe in oh...
